Purse

In a fast-paced stream of events through alleys and with a police car—all underscored by the Black Eyed Peas song, “Where is the Love,” we watch the drama unfold and wonder if the young man is stealing or returning the purse—until the last triumphant moment.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

(Stand Alone Lyrics)
What’s wrong with the world, mama?
People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas.
I think the whole world’s addicted to the drama.
Only attracted to things that’ll bring the trauma.
Yeah. Madness is what you demonstrate,
And that’s exactly how anger works and operates.
Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight.
Take control of your mind and meditate.
Let your soul gravitate to the love ya’ll, ya’ll.

People killin’, people dying.
Children hurt and hear them cryin’?
Can you practice what you preach?
Would you turn the other cheek?

Boy: Ma’am!
Woman: (Gasps)
Boy: You forgot your purse.
Woman: Oh. You don’t know how worried I was. Thank you! Thank you very much!
Police Officer: Hey!

Voiceover: Honesty. Pass it on.

Police Officer: Nice move kid. Donut?

Voiceover: A message from The Foundation for a Better Life.

(Lyrics Underneath Above Dialogue)
Father, Father, Father help us,
Send us some guidance from above.
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’,
Where is the love?
The love, the love.
Where is the love?

Honesty. Pass It On!

Pass It On®

Beautiful commercial, really made it by using that song. Just very unbelievable he would run to where she was going. Might have been more believable if he gave it to the police. Just an opinion, was an amazing commercial though. The donut part was hilarious.

Alix Black from Aurora IL JANUARY 1, 2014

This morning I used this Honesty Commercial during the Children's Moments in our church worship service.to illustrate my point about being honest. Watching the faces of multiage grouping of children was so rewarding. They got the message. And because the commerical was so well done, the door was opened for further discussions and learning opportunities beyond honesty. Thank you for this positive message in this often negative driven world. This is truly a modern day Parable.

Just saw this commercial on my tv minutes ago. I thought it was a great commercial about honesty and not only that but judging a book by its cover. You have a boy who is dressed all in black and most people think, oh he's going to take the purse because hes a troubled kid. NOT THE CASE! I really enjoyed this commercial.

Bart from Falcone JULY 6, 2013
I just saw this commercial for the first time, literally moments ago. I've studied story telling in all its forms most of my life and this is as good as it gets. You did in seconds what some movies can't do in hours. You developed the characters to the extent that I want to know about what happened before and after. Not just for the Kid but the Cop and the Woman too. You built true suspense. Not just will the Kid do the right thing, but with the early drive by introduction of the Cop, at the end if he had seen enough, or would he jump to conclusions? Very well written story. But it's the donut, that makes it art. Definitely worthy of a CLEO or any other award. This is me, www.facebook.com/ptbartmanhs

This is one of my favorite ads. I knew the first time I saw it that boy was going to do the right thing. It helps me have faith in mankind, there are more good people than bad. It's just that we always hear about the bad, not the good. Just yesterday, I saw a young man chase down a lady in the parking lot at Walmart, she had a very full cart and 3 kids in tow, and was making her way back to her car. A large bottle of laundry detergent had fallen off of her cart, and she didn't notice. This young man grabbed it and ran after her and gave it to her. He had piercings, tattoos, the whole lot. As he turned towards me after giving it back, I told him, "Your mama raised you right!" He just shrugged, and said, "no big deal".

This message is for Zariah who replied earlier and said she has really bad narcolepsy. I realize that this forum is supposed to be about the commercial but I wanted to reach out to you and tell you about someone who had a major impact on my life. My beloved Aunt Charlotte also had narcolepsy for the majority of her life. Although she wasn't diagnosed until she was at least in her 20's, if not later. What I wanted to tell you is that in spite of Aunt Charlotte's illness, Aunt Charlotte achieved more and impacted more lives than many completely healthy individuals. Aunt Charlotte attended fashion design school. She was a beauty and could've been a model back in the day. She was an accomplished oil painter, Avon lady, visited the homebound at her church, was a room mom at her child's school. I could keep going. I realize that not all cases of narcolepsy are the same. My beloved aunt lived til the age of 82. Let me tell you, she was one hip and happening human being. One couldn't help but to feel better about oneself when one was in her company. Your illness doesn't have to define you. I know I am not you and not in your shoes, but one never knows whose life we may leave a mark upon. I for one was postively influenced by a creative, warm and caring woman who just happened to have narcolepsy. May peace be upon you. Sorry for the long comment.

I just want to say that my leadership class at my school watches at least 1 of these vids everyday in class...then our awsome teacher Mrs.S asks us to write down the message that we think is what the video is really saying but more of an expanded message like this one:"If you do something kind or honest for somebody you might not always get rewarded physically but you will almost always get rewarded emotionally because if you r kind 2 someine else it makes them and you happy"

Nick from Phoenix JANUARY 31, 2012
Saw this commercial yesterday. It's good to know so many others love it too.

lillian from southview, NY JANUARY 30, 2012
I like how all their commercials are about what you can do better, not what others have to do better. For example, this one doesn't say "don't stereotype" for everybody. It says you specifically be honest.

Jerry D. from Bath. ME JANUARY 28, 2012
I would love for my own children to learn the value of honesty.

Lisa from Sequim, Washington JANUARY 26, 2012
I love this. gives me chills. I have a 16, 19 and 22 year old son who are all individuals, not straigt A students, have long hair, short hair tattoos and piercings...this is fabulous

Cherly from Hamden, Ct JANUARY 25, 2012
Good comercial my kids love it, thanks

Tali T. from Hollywood, CA JANUARY 24, 2012
Love this commercial!! But what on earth is the young guy's name?? He's mad gorgeous haha.

Vic M. from AZ JANUARY 24, 2012
So uplifting & what a nice surprise. Great video, story twist & use of the song!

Ellen from Texas JANUARY 21, 2012
been singing the song for days... very nice commercial

chickiechicks from New York JANUARY 17, 2012
We really liked the commercial! We thought that he looked kind of creepy and he was going to take the purse. The police thought maybe he was stealing too. But actually, he really was a good guy. The boy went running through alleys and around blocks to get it back to her. The lady, the police and I all learned a lesson!

Rose from Canada JANUARY 15, 2012
I Live in Canada and I still love this commercial. In a world where most commercials are just to sell things its nice to see ones like this that are trying to help the world. It brightens my day every time I see it. I hope they keep up the good work.

akdaffodil from alaska JANUARY 11, 2012
It says a lot when I don't care for the messages most rap songs seem to portray....the choice of song for this commercial opened my ears to give them another chance. This message means so much to me, I ask EVERYONE if they have seen it!!!! Keep up the good work!

Linda from Louisville, KY JANUARY 9, 2012
This is my favorite of all of your fantastic ads. We should all know not to judge based on appearance and the second message: that we should laud others when we see them do the right thing.

Patty from Arizona JANUARY 5, 2012
The best commercial on TV :)

Jamie from Alabama DECEMBER 31, 2011
Loved this! Everyone always asumes teenagers do the wrong thing!! And the kid looks like Eli from Degrassi!

Katie from North Carolina DECEMBER 31, 2011
Love this commercial! My husband and I used to work with a youth group in which some of the kids looked like the kid in this commercial. Which to some people means they "looked like they would steal the purse". However, like the kid on this commercial, I feel that in their heart they would know what is right and return the purse. Always remember that it is what's on the *inside* that counts.

ThatKidInYourClass from New Jersey DECEMBER 27, 2011
I saw this commercial for the first time almost a year ago, and it's stuck with me ever since. I tend to wear a lot of black-- not because I'm depressed but because that's what I like. I've been called Emo and other labels, all of which sound negative. Hopefully, this commercial will make people think twice about stereotyping. Thanks.

katt freeman from princeton wisconsin DECEMBER 11, 2011
i really love this comercial!! when i see it on tv i turn it up because i love the song choice

Jackie from E DECEMBER 7, 2011
Thanks for all this short videos i just love them and this one is a great example for honesty

mimi from Chicago, IL NOVEMBER 22, 2011
This commerical was great. I think it gives great message to our youth especially. I hope WE ALL can embrace our enviornment and be true to ourselves. Also, find faith and courage to do the RIGHT THING.

Courtney from Dallas, Texas NOVEMBER 14, 2011
Im 15 years old and ever since i saw this commerical for the first time it has been my favorite i love it so much <3 :)

kyle from philippines NOVEMBER 14, 2011
how can i download this video?

Liz from Minnesota NOVEMBER 9, 2011
It's a great commercial! It has all it needs to get its message out there...try to teach our kids right, and have a little more faith in them to do the right thing. Don't pre-judge them. Give them credit for a job well done. It's not always easy for them in this world we, as adults, have set up for them.

Will Hirsch from Chandler Arizona NOVEMBER 2, 2011
This is a great message! I know a lot of kids who would've stolen the purse. They should watch this video, then maybe they could learn

Benjamin Price from Toronto OCTOBER 26, 2011
When I saw this commercial I was blown away... The young boy looks just like my brother that passed away 10 days before his 20th birthday and that was some thing he would have done! He was always thinking of others. Thank you for honoring his spirit and others like him!

Syaz from Malaysia OCTOBER 23, 2011
I like this song! I thought the boy wanted to take the purse.

Steve B from Hanahan, SC OCTOBER 7, 2011
Love the commercial! Very positive message for everyone.

Monique Rosales from Rhode Island OCTOBER 7, 2011
Excellent message that this brings to our youth, and our society! I love this because it speaks mega-volumes about integrity and values! Thank you for this much needed message!

Deb from Minnesota OCTOBER 6, 2011
I just love this commercial. Went to the values.com website so I could download to keep in my 'treasures' video clips.

Micaela M from GA OCTOBER 5, 2011
Oh wow! I LOVE this!! whenever i hear the song from another room, i rush over to watch it! Im in love with that cute guy too! <3

MurphtheSurf from St. Louis Mo. SEPTEMBER 28, 2011
They are all there: the punk, the big black lady, the cops....and we KNOW how they will act.....but the message of this little film is that presumptions like this can lead one astray. The Lady is gracious and grateful. The Cops don't jump to conclusions. The Kid is Mr. Good Deed. Bravo. I love the bit where the cops recognize the kids action by inviting him into their club..."have a donut." Love it. Everytime this PSA comes on, I stop and watch it.

Jerrel G. from gadsden ,al SEPTEMBER 27, 2011
I love this! I stop what I am doing whenever this spot comes on!

Madeline from ATC Montebello, CA SEPTEMBER 14, 2011
This shows a great principle HONESTY, pass it on!:)

Fatima from ATC, Montebello SEPTEMBER 13, 2011
Love the video (and the music is so good too) it would be so nice if everyone was honest even if no one believes in them. [=

J. Jordan from Montebello, CA SEPTEMBER 11, 2011
Wish our whole world would be this honest. It starts with me and you.

Jennifer H. from Memphis,Tn AUGUST 24, 2011
Wow, he is so fine I hope I'll meet a nice, honest, and cute guy like him one day.

Selena from Michigan AUGUST 23, 2011
Out of all the Pass it On commercials this one is my favorite, not only is the boy SUPER cute but it shows the world that they shouldn't think of teenagers or people who wear all the back clothes and have chains hanging on their belt loops as bad people. Everyone passes judgment because of what people look like when really we have to look at what is in the inside of a person. Plus, the song. I've loved this song for a long time and I've always had an image in my head that we should play this song on every TV and radio in the world to tell people that we need the stop the way we live. It may not be showing all over the world just yet, but it's a great way to start! :)

Ben Dover from Mars AUGUST 20, 2011
My favorite one so far

haleigh. from earth.  AUGUST 17, 2011
i don't know why but this commercial really gets to me, not only does the boy makes my heart sink <3 but what he did was great. -fantastic commercial really.

Sedona from Texas AUGUST 17, 2011
Hes SO Pretty <.3 iWanna Marry Him,.

Ashley from northfreedom,WI AUGUST 11, 2011
I instantly fell in love with this commercial. everyone thinks I'm bad just because I wear a lot of black and I only wear pants even when it's 100 degrees out but this video shows that people like me aren't all bad!

Kristine from summerville, SC AUGUST 11, 2011
This commercial is awesome! I <3 the kid who gave that purse back, he's really cute! :) There should definitely be more commercials like this.

Dee from USA AUGUST 6, 2011
OMG he's SOOOO cute!

Orlando from Houston AUGUST 6, 2011
Why don't we see more in program breaks like this? It would help our wounded world.

Samsam from VA AUGUST 6, 2011
This commercial is awesome. Though, I doubt the kid is really as he is portrayed in the commercial (meaning the dark clothes ect...) A lot of people these days consider people like me (who wears black chains and has lots of facial piercings) bad people. They stray away when we pass by, they give us looks of utter disgust it's so annoying that they judge a book by its cover! I have a very kind heart despite my looks.

Justa14YearOldGirl from the U.S. AUGUST 6, 2011
This is such a powerful commercial. It's great to finally a teenager on TV doing something GOOD. People always just assume that we're bad news...I hope this helps change that. :)

Melissa from Milwaukee,WI AUGUST 5, 2011
I love this commercial and that guy is so cute!:)

Kira Gray from Kodak, Tennessee AUGUST 4, 2011
This song has always meant so much to me, and I just saw this commercial on tv. Hearing this song with this video made me cry and feel so happy. It means a lot to me. I give major Kudos to the people responsible for this.

Kayla from Florida JULY 26, 2011
I saw this commercial, and I fell in love with it. This is so touching! This is something the world needs to see. Thank you for putting this on TV.

Meghan from California JULY 19, 2011
Great message! Cute and adorable guy! anybody know who he is? Hehe. ;)

Meghan from Cali ;) JULY 19, 2011
I absolutely love this commercial. People look at me funny when I'm in school because I prefer to dress from head to toe in black often, even when its "hot" out. Haha, then they judge me because of what they see on the outside. I love this because it shows people that you honestly can't judge a book by its cover. :3 Besides, who doesn't love a commercial with a totally cute and adorable guy? Haha. Anybody know who the actor is?

Rockkell from Virgina JULY 13, 2011
I LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL...I learned that I shouldn't judge people because of the way they dress and now I have some new friends that I never thought I would have. It's amazing what you can get from a commercial...and parents tell you not to watch TV. LOL

Julius from Philipines JULY 11, 2011
This is an honest person who does not take what he didn't own. That is honesty.

Josee D from Cedar Rapids IA JULY 8, 2011
LoL He's Hott:))♥

Rama Belle from Edgewater, New Jersey JUNE 26, 2011
This video is one of the most astounding videos I have ever seen, beleive me. It shows not only honesty, but not to assume the worst about people who dress differently and are unique because they just might suprise you. I enjoyed the video and the message(s) that it gave. Furthermore, the dude is mad gorgeous :)

Salley from South Carolina JUNE 23, 2011
That boy is super cute, not to mention a good person ( based off of what I have seen). I just wish I knew him! <3

Kiki JayJay from NY JUNE 21, 2011
OMG I LOVE THIS VIDEO, I COULD WATCH IT ALL DAY. ONLY IF PEOPLE WERE REALLY LIKE THIS THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE GOD BLESS:}:}:}:}-KIKI WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE, SO MANY PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE PURSE. HONESTY PASS IT ON- JAYJAY

San28 from Alabama JUNE 21, 2011
Love the commercial I stop what I'm doing just to watch it.

Pam from Virginia JUNE 15, 2011
I saw this on t.v. and looked it up online. I always liked the song ever since I saw a gal do it with ASL American Sign Language. A very good and powerful commercial. The humor at the end with the doughnut was cute.

OhI'mJustAGirlInTheWorld from my laptop ;) JUNE 11, 2011
I'm 13 and I LOVE this commercial. Especially because I know tons of guys who look just like this kid. They're all great guys, but everyone just assumes because of the way they dress or the music they listen to, they're automatically bad people. But this kid totally changes that opinion for tons of people. And he's pretty cute too...

Denise R from Ewa Beac,. HI JUNE 7, 2011
I am so happy that they put an EMO kid in this video, my son and all his friends are EMO and they are a great bunch of kids and all very nice and respectful. People tend to judge them harshly because of their style, which is a shame, if they only knew them as the people they are things would be so much better. This was a great video-the kid is very handsome-I for one love the style even if I am too old to be EMO. The other posts from the girls are pretty fun to read, turns out lots of girls think EMO boys are hot, thanks for making this video the way that you did, I think this will really reach out to the EMO kids.

Mandi from New Jersey JUNE 5, 2011
I just saw this video on TV

Jakub from Germany JUNE 4, 2011

Juliette Ariel from New York JUNE 1, 2011
I am working on a book called Scars starring an emo kid and when they make it into a movie I want HIM starring in it as Ryan Lautner a 17 year old drug/alcohol addict who gets into a series of trouble with a lot of girls. . .

Bre from Columbia MAY 31, 2011
This is the best video you can put online!!!!

Daniel Nelson from Cypress MAY 28, 2011
I wish the world was like this, it would make the world a much better place to live. I had that opportunity the other day to return a drivers license and I'm so glad I returned it, it made me feel good inside, and it helped the person a lot. We should all help each other out, we're all humans!

Maude from Los Angeles MAY 28, 2011
He's Cute:)

Christa from Pennsylvania MAY 26, 2011
I really enjoy all of the values commercials, but this is definitely one of my favorites. I always stop to watch it, when I hear it come on TV. Thanks so much to those involved for such a wonderful job. We really do teach by example and you never know when someone's watching you from afar, so let your actions be good and speak for themselves.

Alexa from New Jersey MAY 20, 2011
I love this commercial so much! If only people were actually like this in real life. Not to mention this kid is adorable! I watch this commercial every day, and it just keeps getting better! The guy reminds me of Munro Chambers character on Degrassi too. But seriously I wish I met a guy that was this nice in real life.

Hye from MD MAY 15, 2011

Leslie from Newmarket, On, Canada MAY 5, 2011
An amazing commercial with a brilliant message.

Gabi V. from Mississauga, Ont. MAY 3, 2011
I just love this commercial. The music, the young boy, the cops, everything. As someone else said, the woman should at the least have given the kid a hug. Cop and donuts... nice touch. This commercial truly brings a small lump to my throat. When I hear the music come on, I stop whatever I'm doing so I can watch it.

Karina from Connecticut MAY 1, 2011

It was very touching and it shows that no matter who you are, people can be trusted.

Ali C from Spokane, WA MARCH 22, 2011
I'm so thankful that you show positive actions like this. I am a former corrections officer and my trust in people has definitely diminished. This helps rebuild my trust in the human race.

Maddie from West Virginia MARCH 19, 2011

Sabrina from Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC MARCH 18, 2011
GREAT video!! Wonderful message about honesty, kindness, not judging a book by its cover, making the extra effort for a stranger and helping to make our community a better place to live. This is what our volunteer mentors "Bigs" instill in our kids "Littles"

Karina from NY MARCH 8, 2011
I hope one day I forget my purse and a cute boy brings it back to me and doesn't steal it!

Bianca from California MARCH 6, 2011
Very Good!!! I Like The Way You Guys Used A Rocker Because Many People Consider Us Rockers As The Rebels, the Numskulls And This Lets People Know That We're Honest And Polite Just Like Everybody Else:) I Loved The Video A lot It's One Of The Best Pass It On Videos.. In My Opinion.

Erica C from Paterson NJ MARCH 4, 2011

These 'Life Lessons' are so eloquently and simply illustrated that they leave a lasting impact on the heart and mind. This new commercial is as wonderful as all the other ones your organization has produced. Thank you for providing such positive messages for all to see and hopefully to emulate. I also love receiving the "Quote of the Day" to inspire and uplift me every morning!

Wesley S from Fort Smith JANUARY 26, 2011
Best tv spot ever! Love it! :)

gillian Krantz from vancouver British Columbia Canada JANUARY 26, 2011
This is what the virtuesproject.com teaches. HOwever the woman and the police would have acknowledged the young man by saying, "I see your honesty and helpfulness by returning the purse." They would acknowledge the virtues they saw in the young man.

Amy S. from New York, NY JANUARY 22, 2011
Love it! And I like the fact you are showing blacks and whites getting along, as well as what seems to be a "punk" kid doing something value oriented. Well done.

Peter Ong from Singapore JANUARY 21, 2011
Will show this to my boys! Thanks!

A wonderful and inspiring commercial. It shows that we all have a choice in everything we encounter. You can choose to do the right thing or the wrong thing. Also it shows that we should not judge people by their appearances.

Larry K from Plattsmouth, Ne JANUARY 18, 2011
You keep telling a kid he is bad and chances are he might end up that way. You show the good in him and he will strive to prove you right. Someone once told me when I was 20 years old instead of looking for the bad in other people look for the good in yourself. you will find life will be a lot easier. I have tried to live my life by those words.I believe every kid in school should view this video. What an inspiration that would be.

Laurel S from Wauconda il JANUARY 17, 2011

sarah R from temecula ca JANUARY 12, 2011
Wow,This video is so awesome,it warmed my heart to see someone do that for an elder, and especially teen. That was true thoughtfulness, and integrity on his part.I think more people and teens around the world need to take a stand and do what this kid did, because we need more of this in this day and age

James B. from Detroit JANUARY 10, 2011
I saw the first half of this commercial, and searched for days to find it. I wanted to see the ending and what it was marketing. I showed it to my school at an assembly and they all loved it too.

Who is the hot guy?!?!? I really wanna friend him on Facebook. That commercial was really moving!!!!!!!

The guy is really hot. This commercial almost brought me to tears. I keep showing it to people. I love the honesty and stereotyping message, since I know as a teenager, young people do get stereotyped. Thank you

I think this commercial is exceptional and I was really moved by the act of kindness, an act no one should hesitate at performing. I'm left wondering who portrays this exceptional young man, I wonder if he's credited in any more well developed roles. Just a thought.
