Commuters Save Man in Wheelchair Who Fell from Subway Platform onto Path of Oncoming Train.

September 27, 2021 by By Cathy Stack

In a busy Manhattan subway station, a group of commuters witnessed a man in a wheelchair fall onto the subway tracks. One brave man immediately leapt into action and onto the train track, risking his own life. The good Samaritan wrapped his arms around and lifted the stranger to safety, back up onto the station platform, with the help of bystanders. The oncoming train barreled into the station seconds later.

The dramatic rescue was all caught on cellphone camera.   The frightening scene occurred during the afternoon hours on a busy New York City subway platform as every subway rider’s nightmare became a reality for one unfortunate rider.  The rider’s wheelchair somehow fell onto the subway tracks, leaving the man motionless and too injured to hoist himself back up.  His desperate calls for help got the attention of other passengers waiting for the train.

“There is a downtown local 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall approaching the station. Please stand away from the platform edge,” the public address system loudly announced.

There was no time to waste as the train was fast approaching. Without hesitation, a good Samaritan jumped down to the train tracks, undeterred by the great danger he faced. Frantic bystanders rushed over to offer help.    As a group, they quickly worked together to pull the fallen commuter and his heavy wheelchair, as well as the good Samaritan, back to safety.   The daring rescue occurred with no time to spare — the train’s lights were flashing, indicating it was rushing right around the corner and into the station.

The injured man was transported to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition, according to police.   The humble good Samaritans chose to remain anonymous, preferring not to take credit for their good deed.  Their actions dispelled the notion that big- city dwellers are often hurried and uncaring.  They proved that even in a bustling city, citizens are quick to lend a helping hand to a stranger.

“There are heroes in action,” said commuter Lauren Mennen, who witnessed the miraculous rescue unfold.   “I hope people just take positivity away from all this,” she added.
