Young Girl Makes Homemade ‘Kare Bags’ for Women Experiencing Homelessness.

November 21, 2023 by Cathy Stack

After learning more about the issue of homelessness, Khloe Thompson felt compelled to help in some way. At the time, she and her great grandmother worked together several days per week to sew vibrantly colored shoulder and tote bags, which sparked an idea. She imagined filling up many of her beautiful homemade bags with bare necessities for women living in tents and shelters who had fallen on hard times.   Khloe’s great grandmother loved the idea and she agreed to fund the cost for the necessities that went into the first batch of bags. After the success of their first bag deliveries, they wanted to find a way to continue their compassionate project, so they started their own non-profit foundation, Khloe Kares, in 2015.

IRVINE, California—One morning on their walk to school, 9-year-old Khloe Thompson and her mother passed a woman living on the street. Troubled at the thought of people living so vulnerably without a home, Khloe asked her mother about the reasons for homelessness in their city.

After learning more about the issue, Khloe felt compelled to help in some way. At the time, she and her great grandmother worked together several days per week to sew vibrantly colored shoulder and tote bags, which sparked an idea: She imagined filling up many of her beautiful homemade bags with bare necessities for people without homes. She would then hand out the bags to her many neighbors living in tents and shelters who had fallen on hard times.

Khloe’s great grandmother loved the idea of distributing their totes to help others, and she agreed to fund the cost for the necessities that went into the first batch of bags. After the success of their first bag deliveries, they wanted to find a way to continue their compassionate project. They created a GoFundMe page and posted it on social media to attract potential donors. The overwhelming community response from that campaign motivated Khloe and her family to start their own non-profit foundation, Khloe Kares, in 2015.

Khloe Kares has distributed more than 5,000 homemade ‘Kare Bags’ to unhoused women in the area. The handmade bags, both sturdy and fashionable, are filled with a few months’ supply of 25 basic care items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soup, lotion, socks, undergarments and more. The bags also contain a surprise gift.

The non-profit organization has branched out to help many other communities through partnerships with local companies, churches and other non-profit groups. For ‘Kare Bag’ days, partner organizations work to collect donations of supplies to fill the bags while Khloe Kares provides the totes and helps distribute the items throughout the community.

Khloe Kares hopes to create awareness and improve the lives of women experiencing homelessness. The organization strives to provide vulnerable women within the community with the tools needed to make the transition from the streets to stable housing.

Now 12, Khloe passionately works to motivate other kids to become more engaged and to inspire change within their own communities. She wants other kids to know that their ideas and opinions matter. Her goals include starting a community center in Los Angeles and traveling the world to teach kids and teens how to launch their own community-building projects.

“Don’t let your age stop you from what you want to do. Your age doesn’t determine your impact,” Khloe said.

The Foundation For a Better Life and PassItOn believe that Khloe Thompson is a hero. Her compassionate action is a great example of the value of caring. Khloe proves that anyone can make a transformative impact in their community at any age.
