Passerby Saves Mother and Her 4-Year old Son from Raging Fire

SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wyo.—As Ryan Pasborg drove toward town, late for work one cold February morning, he noticed a distinct smell of smoke. He glanced around and spotted flames shooting from a window in a nearby home. As he pulled over to investigate, he felt shock to see three young children, ages 12, 8 and 6, fleeing from the burning home. They screamed in panic that their mother and 4-year-old brother were still trapped inside.

Ryan acted on pure instinct and immediately ran inside the house, gaining entry through an open garage door. He reached the kitchen, which had filled with heavy smoke that impeded his vision. As he crawled on the kitchen floor, under the smoke, he heard a young child cry. He frantically located the child and carried him outside. He loaded the 4-year-old and the older siblings into his truck to keep them warm and out of the sub-zero temperatures.

He then courageously ran back inside the burning home to search for the missing mother. He again crawled on his hands and knees, searching. He soon found the badly hurt woman lying on the floor and gasping for breath. She was too weak to move on her own, so Ryan wrapped his arm around her and dragged her from the flame-engulfed structure. Once outside, he performed resuscitation measures until she began breathing regularly again.

Ryan drove the mother and her children away from the fire to a safe area nearby where they awaited emergency medical help. First responders took the family to a local hospital where they were treated for burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Miraculously, all family members survived and have since been released from the hospital. The mother and her children are recovering and residing at her mother’s residence until they find a new home.

“He gave this mother and her little boy a fighting chance. His actions were the difference between life and death, truly,” said Deputy Jason Mower of Sweetwater County’s Sheriff’s Office. “It’s more likely than not that, by the time emergency crews got here, it would’ve been too late for the mom and that little boy.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire investigators suspect that one of the children’s hoverboards malfunctioned and ignited while the family slept.

After the fire, Ryan generously purchased several hundred dollars’ worth of clothing and essentials and personally delivered it to the family.

PassItOn believes that Ryan Pasborg is a true hero for his incredible courage and selflessness. His action personifies the value of bravery. He risked his own life to save a mother and child who were complete strangers to him. His action exemplifies the good that can occur within a community when neighbors take care of one another, and his selflessness will remain etched in the family’s memories.

Bravo Ryan! Few and far between are the people who dare to lose their own lives in order to give others a chance to live. Step up and step in whenever you can, have the courage demonstrated by Ryan....who could have just rushed on by-because he was late for work. God bless!
