Explore the value of Reaching Out
Here are some inspiring stories about reaching out.
REACHING OUT
I CAN'T HEAR YOU Last week I was in the boarding area of the airport excited for my Easter trip home to see my parents and brother. I was preoccupied with plans for the weekend but was brought out of my daydreaming by an elderly woman talking loudly into her cell phone. She kept asking the person to meet her where she was and was...

GENUINE RED RYDER 200 SHOT CARBINE ACTION AIR RIFLE One of my all time favorite movies is "A Christmas Story" which follows the plight Ralphie Parker who is a nine year old boy from Indiana. The main point of this story is Raphie's desire for a "Genuine Red Ryder 200 Shot Carbine Action Air Rifle" for Christmas. Throughout the movie, all the indicators are that it...

HELPING A MAN WITH A PROBLEM My daughter, 25 at the time, took me to my favorite diner for lunch. There was a man, wearing an old army jacket, that obviously had some mental disabilities as well as financial problems. The waitresses were extremely discourteous and insisted the man show them his money before they would take his order...very...

“I don't want to live in the kind of world where we don't look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I can't change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”

Charles de Lint

“Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone's hand is the beginning of a journey. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours.”

Vera Nazarian

Here are some stories about everyday heroes who show 'reaching out'.
REACHING OUT
Cindy & Darlene My heroes, Cindy and Darlene, are actually connected. I was looking for a job and had been out of work for a little while when my mom, through some volunteer work, found out about a local job training center for people with disabilities. I was tested and I got a job coach, Cindy. She was great. Cindy helped me...

My Mother My mother is my hero. She saved me from dying when I was 8 years old. She pushed me out of the way of a speeding car and died saving me. She was only 28 years old. Out of respect and honor for my mom I went to college and got my masters degree in real estate. Now I'm 28 years old, and I feel the need to pass on...

If you see someone new at the school you just walk over and say hi.

This commercial really inspired me! I was in Sunday School a while ago, and the ten-year-old granddaughter of the teacher was there. She doesn't go to our church, and she was sitting at a table with the teacher and the assistant. I could tell she wanted to sit with somebody else without having to ask, so I asked her to sit beside me. Her whole face just lit up, and she thanked me again and again. It felt so good to do that, I try to do it every day at least once. Thank you!
