Founded in 1980, Voices for Children transforms the lives of children in foster care by providing them with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). These volunteers – trained and supported by Voices for Children – advocate for youth in court, school, medical settings, and more to ensure their needs are met. Over time, a CASA often becomes the most consistent adult in the life of a child in foster care. Each year, the organization honors one special volunteer who has gone above and beyond in their advocacy for youth in foster care. The Voices for Children 2022 CASA of the Year is Tim R. who has has advocated for six youth in foster care over the past decade.
Over the past decade, Tim has exemplified unwavering dedication to youth in foster care in San Diego County. A former healthcare marketing agency owner with more than 30 years of experience, Tim’s volunteerism began in 2012 as he sat in the jury duty waiting room. A judge at the time asked the men in the room to consider volunteering as a CASA since there was a high need for male volunteers to advocate for young boys in foster care. As he was an empty nester of two grown adult children whom he and his wife adopted at birth — the need to volunteer with youth in foster care seemed like a perfect opportunity.
Children in foster care have experienced abuse and neglect. Once they enter the dependency system, their world suddenly includes court hearings, social workers, attorneys, and often new homes and schools. Amidst it all, a CASA is the one consistent, caring presence for a child. Tim dedicates much of his time as a CASA volunteer, going above and beyond as an advocate for the youth he serves. He seeks understanding and learns more about what they need most.
