In the summer of 2012,i was diagnosed with scoliosis. At the time the top of my spine had a 67 degree curve and my bottom had 45. We started to have to go for monthly checkups to the british columbia childrens hospital, which is a 9 hour drive there from where i live. In 2013 we found out i was going to need spine surgery to straighten my spine. 2013 was a busy year full of trips to vancoucer (thats where the childrens hospital is located). I also needed plenty xrays and mri's. During 2012 the year diagnosed i won track and field provincials in 200m and broke my track clubs 200m 13 year old girls record which wasnt broken in 27 years, i also was third in the 100. In 2013, being full of hosptal visits, i had almost won the 100m at the 2013 provincials but fell before the finish line. I ran the next day with a concussion and came 3rd in the 200. I also qualified for Canada youth nationals, i came 19th in my age group and the year olders age group combined and for just my age i am 5th in canada for the 100. My curved increased to 70 degrees and 50 by the time i had my surgery in january and im taking a season off track. Thanks to my spine i have lots of city publicity with track involved with it. I was interviewed on my back with my local newspaper and made the front page. I also was nominated for a "rising star" award in all of northern British columbia from athletes 18 and under. I am also going to be a torch carrier at the canada winter games in 2015, and ony 150 people get the honor in doing this. Thanks to my spine ive gone trough lots of pain , but its making me better than ever with track. I can start training again in august. Many people know my name know in my area where i live and im an inspiration to many. For more about me follow my instagram- @laurenmatheson and twitter- @_laurenmatheson
