A few years ago, my boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer. This particular surgery had a few unanticipated complications and he had to stay in the hospital. I was leaving the hospital one night pretty upset. A woman, possibly her husband and daughter were walking in front of me. I was talking on my phone to my mom(who was 5 hours away) when the woman in front of me turned around to face me and said "you look like you need a hug" and hugged me. I said thank you, as she turned and continued walking. I was caught by surprise. I told my mom what had happened and she told me that was from her. A complete stranger gave me exactly what I needed at that moment. Even on a bad day, someone else is probably having a worse day than me. I almost always smile and say hello to everyone I see now because you never know what little gesture can help someone out.
