About a year or two ago I was on a city bus sitting near the rear exit door. This lady with Down syndrome was preparing to get off when she suddenly looked up at me, her face lit up with a big smile and said, "Well hi there"! I mean she just blew me away with her positive outlook I greeted her with the same cheerfulness she gave me. She told me that she was going shopping and asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. We got off at the same stop where she told me to have a nice day (would you believe I am starting to tear up right now as I write this?). I just had a good feeling inside.
Later, when I was going to take the return bus home, there at the bus stop was the same lady. This time I greeted her with the same big smile she gave me earlier and she seemed really glad to see me. She told me she had a good time and asked me if I did too, which I told her I did. When I got off the bus she again wished me well.
After that whenever I see someone with Down syndrome I make a point to say hi to them with the same warmth that lady gave me. I haven't seen her since and I don't know her name but I'll always treasure her in my heart.
