Keep Hope Alive Baltimore!

My question to you today is...is it possible to now write 7 success stories of people affected by the downturn economy? It seems that all we read, see and hear these days from the media is negative jargon. We all know how negative media affects readers and viewers. I know it's a stretch, but wouldn't it be uplifting to actually open the paper or go online and see something good for a change? Giving people hope is a very important element in this "economic crisis" we are all in. So, let me get to my point.

As of June 2008, while living in Baltimore, I was let go of my job as Creative Director for a small insignificant media company located in York, Pennsylvania. The very same day, I got online a filed for unemployment. My checks started coming in a few weeks later. Unexpectedly, I received a letter from the State of Maryland shortly after with a questioner. The letter was an offer at a chance to take free entrepreneurial classes to start my own business through WEB (Women Entrepreneur's of Baltimore). I responded to the letter with a few sentences explaining why I should be picked to take these entrepreneurial classes. After 3 rigorous tests and 2000 other unemployed candidates later, I and 24 others were chosen to start the 8 week course. Classes met at the WEB office in Baltimore's historic Federal Hill, 2 times per week for 8 weeks.

I can now tell you that I am nearing the end of my 8 weeks at WEB and have recently started taking clients. The nature of my NEW business is simple. LGK Creative Group, LLC provides eco-friendly advertising and design to local Baltimore businesses. This dream has been in my heart for 8 years. To have been given an opportunity such as this one was a far away reality for me. I want to let people know that being unemployed doesn't mean being hopeless. You need hope to survive the ups and downs that life throws at you. It is also my belief that my classmates and I have a new sense of pride. We are all now business owners. We look forward to our own personal future and the future of our state of Maryland. It is up to us as individual entrepreneurs to push on and succeed in good times and in bad. On November 20, 2008, Baltimore, Maryland will have 25 new business owners to help boost our local economy. That to me is something worth writing about.

I hope this story can be a glimmer of hope for others not to give up pursuing their dreams.
