Two Amazing People

I recently read a wonderful account of an incredible act of kindness. It involved the country singer, Jan Howard, and it occurred back in the early or mid 1950's. You can read about it in her wonderful autobiography, 'Sunshine and Shadow.' She was destitute with three children and at least two of them were babies. She had been forced to leave her husband due to his chronic irresponsibility. At one point she suffered a nervous breakdown due to his cruel and uncaring behavior.

So she grabbed her children and decided to flee, but had no known destination. This all took place in a small town in Kansas, called, Frontenac. She had very little gas in the tank and no money at all and she didn't even manage to make it out of Frontenac. As the needle on the gas gauge dipped towards "empty" she began to panic. She then went towards a house, not knowing the occupants who resided there. As she put it she 'put her pride in her pocket" and went to the door.

When she explained her situation to the older woman who answered the door, the woman ordered her husband to go help Jan carry the children into the house. These wonderful people allowed her to stay for two weeks until she received some money in the mail from a relative. They fed and cared for Jan and her children for all that time. This is one of the most exemplary acts of kindness I have ever come across in my fifty years. These "angels" were named Henry and Sarah and they will always be warmly remembered by me for what they did for Jan and her children. I have even tried finding their children or grandchildren in the Frontenac area with no success. I just wanted to tell them what incredible people I think Henry and Sarah were. They demonstrated the degree of caring for our fellow human being that we should all have.
