At the time of the accident, Shedly had been traveling to a spa for some pampering – a birthday gift from her fiancé, Woody Sully. At eight months pregnant, Shedly had hoped the spa day treat would give her a chance to relax before the anticipated arrival of their first child.

As she drove, she began to feel dizzy, lost control of her car and careened into a roadside pond. Water gushed into the vehicle. She panicked, and a wave of helplessness rushed over her when she realized the car door would not open. She first called Woody and told him she was in the water, but her phone died before she could share more details.

Suddenly, a young man – later identified as Logan Hayes – appeared at the car window. He aggressively swung open the car door then guided her to safety.

Logan had been driving the same route when he witnessed the terrifying car crash and pulled over. He noticed the car was quickly sinking, leaving little time to wait for help. Without hesitation, he rushed to the lake and plunged into the water on a rescue mission.

As a fisherman and surfer who is comfortable in the water, Logan has unique swimming abilities that aided him in rescuing Shedly.

Logan swam out 40 feet to reach the vehicle. He quickly determined that the back door remained above water, so he focused his efforts there. After prying open the the door, he instructed Shedly to come with him.

“When he swung that door open, I was like, OK, you are an angel,” Shedly recalled.

He had perfect timing, because the car had begun to sink even further.

“When I got a hold of her and turned around, the car was already under the water,” said Logan.

Logan gently held Shedly afloat until they reached the safety of shore. First responders arrived shortly afterward and rushed her to a local hospital. Four hours later, doctors performed an emergency C-section and delivered a healthy baby girl weighing three pounds, 14 ounces. The couple named their daughter Ivory.

Shedly now shares her birthday with her miracle baby girl and has an incredible tale to tell her of the day she entered the world.

The Foundation for A Better Life and PassItOn Believe that Logan Hayes is a hero. His action is a great example of the value of bravery. His quick thinking and courage saved the lives of a young woman and her baby. He turned a potential tragic incident into an unforgettable day of miracles.
