11-year-old Girl Rescues Child from Well.

Kathleen Freeman, Jackߴs mother, had been nearby watering her hydrangeas at the time. 

She recalled the harrowing event, saying, “I heard a banging noise and then a scream... that I never heard out of my son before.” 
In a panic, she ran to find Jack, and she traced the echoes of his voice to the well positioned between her home and their neighborsߴ home. When she peeked over the edge, she was shocked to find Jack at the bottom, sobbing and calling out for her. He stood on chunks of concrete that sat in a few inches of water, and he clutched a nearby pole for safety.

Not wanting to leave Jack’s sight, Kathleen screamed for help. Her pleas alerted Juliana, who had been contently watching a movie in her home next door. Juliana ran outside and acted immediately when she saw Jack, whom she had known all his life, trapped in the well. She grasped the gravity of the situation and immediately dialed 911 for assistance. She gave the phone to Kathleen so that she could answer the dispatcher’s questions. 

Juliana then quickly grabbed a 12-foot ladder she found nearby and sprinted over to offer help. With the help of her dad, she cautiously placed the ladder down the well, angling it away from Jack to avoid hitting him. The pair, along with Kathleen, consoled and coaxed Jack to grab hold of the ladder and climb to safety. Once on solid ground, soaking wet and bruised, Jack ran to his relieved mother’s arms for comfort.

First responders shortly arrived on scene to provide aid. Jack had sustained minor scratches and bruises, but was otherwise unscathed. He was taken to the hospital for further examination. 

Kathleen credited Juliana’s quick thinking with saving the day. She praised the young hero for her calm reaction during the frightening ordeal. 

The Tyngsboro Fire Department has since secured the well opening with a heavy metal plate and cement blocks to prevent future accidents.
