As I attend the wedding of David and Mary Anne , I listen for the words"for better or worse, in sickness and health, richer or poorer, until death due us part", I reflect on the true meaning of marriage. I look at the photo of my parents' wedding in 1944 , my mom wearing a suit and my dad in his Army uniform, and see the promise that lasted until "death due us part" and the photo of my grandparents , married in 1904 , that lasted for 65 years.I look at the people at the wedding, one couple celebrating their 45th anniversary today, and the two couples that have been married for 51-52 years. I reflect on my favorite Uncle Jimmy and Uncle Buddie and their marriages of 42 and 52 years until death due us part.
What do these people have ? Faithfulness and patience. The faithfulness and patience to persevere through good times and difficult times, and sickness and health.I reflect on the husbands and wives that take care of each other when sickness comes and don't give up. And for richer or poorer, I reflect on poorer times my family had , poorer than we probably have today. What kept them together? It was perhaps, accepting "life" as it is , together.
And my wish for David and Mary Anne today is that they are faithful to each other as best friends and if they have difficult times , be patience and ask their best friend for help: Jesus!
