In addition to dropping some money into the Salvation Army pot, my friend tries to always do something different for the bell ringers each year during the holidays. Two years ago, she began bringing coffee or hot chocolate out to them. Last year, she gave them hand warmers. This year she heard about an item the homeless really needed but rarely received. The bell ringer outside the local Sam's Club store thanked her all the way to her car after she came out of the store and left him with a huge box of new winter socks. He excitedly got the Salvation Army truck to immediately come pick them up. His reaction touched her so much that she gave her sons a Christmas present of money to do the same where they live, telling them, "my present is the joy you will experience through this act of kindness." Her reward was in hearing how her sons experienced the joy of giving that makes a difference. And because of her, there are a lot of people now enjoying the comfort of clean, warm socks.
